India, UK variants equally transmissible, finds study
Public Health England, the executive agency of the UK department of health, has equated the novel coronavirus sub-lineage, B.1.617.2 of Indian variant or double mutant B.1.617, with the UK strain B.1.1.7 in terms of transmission rate. Apart from the UK, the sub-lineage B.1.617.2 is prevalent in Maharashtra and other parts of India.
SC ropes in experts for national task force to overhaul allocation of O2 to states
Supreme Court on Saturday drew health experts from all over India to set up a National Task Force to devise a scientific formula for rational and equitable allocation of oxygen to states, audit utilisation and suggest means to augment production. The bench asked the cabinet secretary to be the convenor of the group and said the expert body will, within a week, provide the formula for need-based, dynamic allocation of medical oxygen to states and UTs.
Covid: Share of those on Oxygen support comes down
The share of active cases on oxygen support and ICU has dropped in last one month, though the active caseload has increased exponentially during this period, indicating that the proportion of severe cases might have come down while cases remain high. Currently, 3.7% of total active cases are on oxygen support, as compared to 4.5% on April 9. The number of patients in ICU declined to 1.34%, compared with 2.31% a month ago.
Assam: Himanta may be CM, BJP may recall Sonowal to Delhi
Newly-elected BJP MLAs in Assam will meet on Sunday to finalise the selection of the new chief minister of the state amid likelihood of Himanta Biswa Sarma pipping incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal to the post. Sources said the party leadership will announce its decision after meeting the newly-elected MLAs in Guwahati. Sonowal will be brought to the Centre, should Sarma nose ahead in the final lap on Sunday, sources said.
Early signs of 2nd wave peaking as growth slows
For the first time since the beginning of the second wave in mid-February, the seven-day rolling average of daily cases dipped on Friday. The dip was negligible, just a drop of 118 cases out of the day's total average of over 3.9 lakh. But it indicated a distinct slowing down in the growth of daily cases over the past week.
Radhe gets 21 cuts after film certification
Salman Khan and Disha Patani’s highly anticipated film ‘Radhe’ is all set to release on May 13. Prior it’s release, buzz is that Salman has voluntarily offered 21 cuts to his film after the certification. As we all know that ‘Radhe’ may have limited release in cinemas in some parts of the country, the Examining Committee of the CBFC ( Central Board of Film Certification) has endorsed the film with UA certification.
Positivity rate 20% or more in 2 out of every 5 districts in India
Over 40% of India’s 741 districts, or 301 of them, had a test positivity rate of 20% or more for the week from May 1 to May 7. Of the 15 districts with positivity rates above 50% for the period, Haryana had four and Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan two each. The highest positivity rates were in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh which registered 91.5%, but this is likely an indication of low number of tests.
Fix vaccination drive, ensure poor & villagers not left out: Lancet
Pointing out the weaknesses in the government’s response, The Lancet said in an editoral that, “First, the botched vaccination campaign must be rationalised and implemented with all due speed.” The journal said the Indian government gave the impression that India had beaten Covid-19 despite repeated warnings of the dangers of a second wave and emergence of new strains, in comments that are sharply critical of the Centre.
Shravan's son Sanjeev is now COVID-free
Shravan Rathod-of Nadeem Shravan jodi, passed away due to COVID on April 22. Down with COVID themselves, the acclaimed musician's elder son Sanjeev and wife Vimla Rathod who were admitted in Seven Hills Hospital at that time, could not have even his last glimpse. But the ordeal was far from over for the Rathods; Sanjeev's condition subsequently deteriorated and he had to be put on oxygen support.

Bayern Munich secured a record-extending ninth consecutive Bundesliga title on Saturday without kicking a ball, after RB Leipzig's 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund kept the Bavarians seven points clear with two games left for their rivals. Dortmund's Jadon Sancho scored twice, including an 87th- minute winner to beat Leipzig, who have yet to seal their Champions League spot for next season.
